How To Choose An Air Conditioning Unit

By Wanda T. Milam

The hot summer months could be avoided if you have air conditioning. However, before going out and having one installed you should know some quick basic facts. This article will cover some things you may find handy prior to making that buying decision.

First of all buying this sort of appliance is definitely budget dependent. Depending on how much money you have, you can choose to purchase a second hand unit or buy brand new. Regardless of your choice, what really matters is the energy rating of the unit you choose to buy.

The energy rating of a unit is known as the SEER rating. This is also known as the Seasonal Energy Efficiency ratio. A used model or older unit will most likely have a SEER rating on average of about 7, whilst newer and more modern models will have an average rating of 13 or more. Go for a unit that has at least a 12 rating or higher.

Before opening your wallet or swiping your card, determine the areas in your office or house that need to be cooled during the hot months. Bigger areas will need bigger machines and vice versa. Thus it is also logical to expect that larger areas will cost more in dollars when cooled. Please also note that when big areas are involved there may come a time that minor construction may be called for, especially if a split type unit is installed as against a window mounted one.

As with any new appliance installation also consider safety. As an air conditioner is considered a major appliance it also puts major stress on the overall power load of the house. It is advisable that a separate breaker unit be installed for it to prevent accidental electrical fires and sudden power outages.

Also be environmentally responsible in your purchase. Get an environmentally friendly unit. Do not buy one that uses chlorofluorocarbons that will destroy the ozone layer. In all purchasing decisions, particularly this one, always go green and always be nature friendly.

There are plenty of other considerations when trying to cool your home this summer. Definitely there are other options and considerations out there. What is important to know is that you have the final buying decision and so you must use this decision wisely.
