All About Air Conditioning

By Paul Reestin

When making the choice to purchase a new air conditioning unit, HVAC (heating, venting, air conditioning) personnel can give their expert advice on the perfect solution to cool and dehumidify your space. The main kinds of air conditioning units are the window unit, split, packaged and central units.

The actual type of air conditioning unit you choose depends on a number of factors like how large the space is that will need air, energy costs in short and long term and what the installation costs. There are various types of air conditioning units available for purchase that fit a variety of situations. This is a big purchase and one that should be very carefully made with the input of a professional certified in installation and product design.

Window Air Conditioning Unit

These units sit on a window sill and all of the components of the air conditioner, including the compressor, condenser, coils and evaporator are all in one box. For single rooms, window air conditioning units are the most commonly used for cooling. In this air conditioner all the components, namely the compressor, condenser, expansion valve or coil, evaporator and cooling coil are enclosed in a single box.

Split Air Conditioning Unit

As the name suggests, split air conditioning units are comprised of outdoor and indoor units, with the separate parts of the appliance located in different places. The outdoor section holds the compressor, condenser and valves. Indoors boxes hold the evaporator and coils or fan. These units are smaller and as part of the unit can be placed outside, are more attractive for small spaces than larger units. In addition, these units are best at cooling smaller spaces; bedrooms, kitchens or individual work spaces are perfect for split units.

Packaged Air Conditioning Unit

The two types of a packaged air conditioning unit include all the elements needed for the device, namely the air compressor, condenser, evaporator are placed in just one box and the cooled air is blown through the channels installed through various locations. As the second option, the air compressor and condenser are placed in one area, typically outside, while the rest is indoors. A highly qualified HVAC specialist can help you decide if this unit will work best considering your space and air conditioning needs. They can also guide you on the process of installation and how this will affect your current space.

Central Air Conditioning System

In a central air conditioning unit, which are often used for cooling big buildings, houses, offices, entire hotels, gyms, movie theaters or hospitals, the HVAC specialists can make recommendations for units to work correctly, and these are typically split with part of the unit inside the house and part outside.
